OFFICIAL RULES

No points, just flip the shells

SET UP Determine both teams, each player/team should place (6) coconuts on their side roughly 10 feet away from their opponent.
  • Each player/team should place (6) coconuts in a triangle formation or any desired layout.
  • Players must stand behind the front coconut shell while tossing.
  • To determine which player/team goes first, the first player/team to sink a ball in any of the coconuts starts.

SCORING if a player sinks a ball into a coconut shell, their opponent flips the coconut over.
  • Player(s) must wait to toss the next turtleball until the previous ball has been removed from the coconut, and the shell is flipped over.
  • If a ball bounces in and out of a coconut shell, the ball does not count. This ball is still a live ball and can be used to be knocked into a coconut shell. The ball must rest at the bottom of the shell to count.
  • If a ball bounces in/out of a coconut shell and lands into another coconut, only one coconut is to be flipped over.
  • If a player/team makes both shots in a row, they get (2) balls back and shoot again.
  • Players are not allowed to block their opponent’s shots. Players must allow both turtleballs to come to a rest before picking them up. If there are any obstructions, their opponent may toss the ball again.
  • Players may request their opponent(s) to remove any bumps, footprints/imperfections in the sand at any time for courtesy.
  • A player/team is declared a winner when they flip over all (6) of their opponent’s shells.
  • If Player A/Team A sinks both balls into the last shell, the game is complete. Player B/Team B does not get redemption.
  • If a player/team only sinks one ball into their opponent’s final shell, the defending player/team has a “redemption round” where a player/team has a chance to toss twice.

REDEMPTION rounds are "toss until you miss". If a player makes it, they get the same ball back until they miss and the second ball is thrown. Only the losing team can try for redemption.
  1. The team must hit the remaining shell on their first try in order to stay in the game
  2. If the team misses their shot, the game is over and the opposing player/team wins.
  3. If the team hits the shell, the game goes into overtime.
  4. There are no re-racks during redemption.
  5. If the losing team succeeds in hitting all remaining shells, the game goes into overtime.

OVERTIME occurs after a player/team successfully completes the “redemption”.
  1. Turtleball Overtime requires each opponent to turn over the front (3) coconuts. The player/team that first flipped all of their coconuts during regulation tosses first.
  2. The team that makes all (3) coconuts first wins. You can finish the game without the other player/team getting a chance to shoot if you get balls back on your first attempt and then one of the players sinks the last coconut.
  3. If necessary, Double Overtime requires (4) coconuts - Diamond Pattern, which excludes the (2) back corner coconuts. Same overtime rules apply.
  4. Triple Overtime only requires the front coconut. First player/team to sink a ball in the front shell, wins.
  5. Flip the shells over and play again!
