The Day It All Began: 5 Year Anniversary

On June 16th, 2020, the world celebrated World Sea Turtle Day—a day dedicated to honoring one of the ocean’s most ancient and endangered creatures. For me, it was more than a celebration. It was the day I introduced Turtleball® to the world.

After years of dreaming, sketching, sanding coconut shells in my parents’ garage, and refining the game’s design, I knew this wasn’t just a product—it was a purpose. Launching Turtleball on World Sea Turtle Day wasn’t a coincidence. It was a statement.

Sea turtles have been on this planet for over 220 million years, yet nearly every species is now endangered due to human activity—especially plastic pollution. I didn’t want to create another plastic beach game. I wanted to flip the script.

So I did.

Turtleball is made from real coconut shells, a natural byproduct of the coconut industry that’s often discarded or burned. By repurposing these shells into a game that’s lightweight, portable, and deeply symbolic, we’re turning play into a platform for ocean awareness.

That first launch was humble—just a few posts, a video, and a message: Play with purpose. Protect the turtles.
Since then, Turtleball has grown into a movement. Every shell flipped is a reminder that small actions can create big ripples. And every game played is a chance to connect with nature, with each other, and with the mission to leave nothing but footprints.

World Sea Turtle Day will always be our anniversary. The day Turtleball went from a backyard idea to a beachside reality. The day we started flipping shells—and flipping perspectives. I may not have everything figured out yet, but I'm exactly when I need to be. I can't change yesterday, can't worry about tomorrow, all I have is this moment.
